Crimson Wings by aruarian-dancer Crimson Wings by aruarian-dancer
"Crimson Wings" -- line art in pen scanned and colored in Corel Painter using Intuos 3 tablet

This is another one of the fantasy pieces for the Enchanted Visions Project. "Crimson Wings" is the theme for the month of October 2010. This is my 8th piece for the project and probably the brightest and most "over the top" to date. lol That's what you can expect with red (and so much yellow) in the picture. ^_^

I tend to like drawing aloof fantasy beings that are almost transparent, but this one has such presence (Can't be helped when she's looking directly at you. lol) that's goddess like. So anyway, it felt different from usual and that may be why it took me so long to finish, too.

Sari was fun to draw and fun to paint and put details into. I especially enjoyed the leaf pattern on the skirt. You probably can't see it even at large size view the thread-like details that are there when you see it at the original file size. I recently got myself a new, larger monitor, so that explains my going overly enthusiastic with the details on this piece. Also because of the color scheme, the energy of the piece is almost overwhelming. (Seriously, how long can one stare at all that red and yellow backlit and glowing as on a computer monitor... I'd imagine the actual print version of this piece would look a lot better color-wise.) My next piece will be much more sadate and calm, I'm sure.

I am glad, though, to have painted an Indian fairy, which I think is unusual and unique, and undoubtedly beautiful. I've always adored Indian textile and sari -- a garment that accentuates the natural beauty of female form with graceful simplicity. I've made so many dresses out of Indian fabrics for casual wear. ^_^

I think you have this piece confused with some other piece by someone else. I never received any notice from dA of a request that mentioned this. ^^;

It was kind of hard for me to work on her in those colors after a while. I turned down my monitor's brighness setting from 100 to 64, and she still glows and almost hurts my eyes. :XD:

Hehe, I almost do the glowy too much on my paintings... or most definitely too much. LOL :XD: (I'm afraid that it's as bad as how so many people use 'dodge and burn' tool excessively, although my glowy effects are hand painted using a 'soft chalk'.)

I don't think so:ohnoes:.
I think its just perfect for your style ^^, If i on the otherhand decided to give the glowy thing a go...that would just be disastrous:XD:!
How do you hand-paint it?

I'm glad that you think it's perfect for my style. :D

I think you can use any opaque media at low transparency to do this glowy thing. On Corel Painter, I use "soft charcoal" in white (or whatever color you want) set at about 25 to 50% opacity and at low "grain" and just draw little circles. You can change the brush size for either large or small glowy orbs. You can pretty much do the same exact thing with white colored pencils with very light pressure on colored paper, too. ^^

You color so beautifully! I'm drawn in by her eyes and the amazing colors chosen for this fairy. I just love how some artists make the white sparklies with traditional mediums (that I can only do on Photoshop)

I use "soft pastel/charcoal" at low opacity for the sparklie dots. They're fun and I think I put them in every one of my pieces. :XD:

First off WOW. The colors are amazing! Secondly I love that it looks as if she's trying to lure you in... put you under a spell. Trick you like those spots on the moth wings trick things that might be trying to prey on them. XD That's why I'm always fascinated with moth and butterfly patterns. This is so beautiful though. And I love the little shine on her earring! And that sari is gorgeous! It makes you want to try it on! LOL

I'm still squinting! :XD: Also wondering how the colors are looking on everyone else's monitors. I've recently lowered the brightness setting on mine from 100 to 64, and now I can see subtle textures and stuff, but it still looks bright to me. lol

And yes, once again, this one looks predatory -- lure you in and put you under a spell!

I used a new tool to make the golden dust ("sharp chalk") on the wings, but my trusty "soft charcoal" did the shine on her earring and blurry dots in the foreground. ^^ Sparkly fun!

lol They're not overly bright on mine... but they're vivid and beautiful. Like you'd actually see in Indian culture. So many wonderful vibrant colors.

XD I love that look! Woman power!

Oooo new tool! I did that the other night when I was just messing around. Except I used one of the sponges. lol XD :la: for sparkles!

Yeah, I have to experiment more often. I had the urge to do some landscapes after seeing your recent piece, but then... gosh Halloween party is on Friday, and I have only 2 days to work on Jr's costume!
