"Enma Ai (Jigoku Shoujo) WIP" -- lunch time doodle for 04-23-2009.
I took the "Enma Ai - rough" from a while ago and started expanding it into a bigger and more complicated piece. I wanted this one to have the look of the Japanese kiri-e (cut paper). I like the look so far. Just as in "rough" version, I'd like to add butterflies all over and some kind of pattern to her kimono.
Ai-chan is such a classic Japanese beauty. I love everything about her! There's a word "yamato nadeshiko" to describe just such a girl. To me, she fits that phrase perfectly. And that she's got such a spooky job with such a tragic past -- such a heroine!
Between Enma Ai and Jin from Samurai Champloo, I get a lot of practice for the bead bracelet! I like them though -- especially the way they just dangle loosely at the wrist. Luckily, I've got one of my own for reference.
Hehehe, I can't seem to resist putting in sparkles. I'm bad about it, really!
Oh, you know, straight lines of hair -- for that matter, any line in arc -- are best achieved with a speed and decisiveness rather than slowly and carefully. For that, I shrink the image (fraction of the actual size) to the point the area where the line is supposed to cover/appear is all visible within the field, and just use my whole arm rather than just my hand to sweep the line. If it's a little "off" placement-wise or angle-wise, I "undo" and do it over. Hope this helps.

"Yamato" means "Japan" -- it's an old word to refer to Japan and "nadeshiko" is a type of flower known in English as "Sweet Williams" or "pinks". Combined together, "yamato nadeshiko" means a Japanese girl, but a traditional type that looks good and feels comfortable in kimono (and daisy-like in personality).

I hear a noise inside my brain...
I'm ill...
I'm a Dead Nurse!
No no.. I love how the colors of her eyes are like the colors of the mists...
I'm always amazed at how you can draw the straight lines of her hair, now that I have a tablet that seem.... impossible at the moment. Whew.
