Fade to White by aruarian-dancer Fade to White by aruarian-dancer
"Fade to White (in the Pale Moonlight)" -- line art in ballpoint pen on paper, scanned, then colored in Corel Painter

This is a 60,000 pageview kiriban request gift piece for :iconastegal: who answered "calla lily, rose, and carnation, all white" when asked about favorite flower. Hope you like it. ^^ ~Astegal, please note me with your e-mail so I can send you a high resolution file of this.

I like white flowers for several reasons. One, many of them are very fragrant. Two, their subtle colors in different lights are delight for me to try to capture. Three, there's nothing quite like white flowers for expressing "purity". So, all in all, this was a joy to draw and paint.

You can see I'm having a 'whiplash' experience from my previous silkworm moth fairy painting. I wanted this to be very pale and just a "whisper" of a picture, totally unlike the Indian Moth Fairy. Ethereal and vision-/apparition-like and if you move or say something, she'd disappear into thin air... (although the flowers presented here are relatively long-lasting).

I like the expression I ended up with on this particular image. She's definitely not smiling, but not looking overtly sad, either. I'd be interested in hearing what you get out of the mystery of her psychological state. :D

It's beautifully illustrated :) And if you were to ask me, I'd say that she's possibly looking back on something she enjoys, and remembers with fondness, however that slight melancholy look about her, is from the fact it's come to an end or it ended badly. But either way, she's certainly lost in thought! I love it!

When you say she looks neither smiling nor overly sad, the best description I can think of is:

...well, she looks rather like a flower herself. Flowers have that quiet dignity, and sometimes, that seeming indifference; a temporal beauty which is fragile, newly bloomed yet already about to fade, neither joyful in life nor despairing in death, but somehow experiencing both these states at once, captured at that moment in between these polar opposites. That's what I think of when I look at her.

And I think I haven't been getting enough sleep. I wax philosophical when I'm overtired.

Thank you. ^^ Yes, I draw those lips I call "bird lips" that kind of remind me of little beaks. Jr.'s lips were very much like those when she was a baby -- they're little less prominently "birdy" these days. She swears she doesn't like them, but I think they're so cute, so I draw them often. :XD:

*nod nod* Sometimes with girls, it's the hardest thing to convince them that they're beautiful. I tell her (but she thinks I'm just biased toward her since I'm her mom :XD: ) and I draw the bird lips almost every chance I get. The funny thing is that she'd often mention that she likes the way I draw the lips. Of course, if I point it out that they're just like hers, she'd dismiss it and walk away. :XD:

Of course she dismisses it and what you tell her. LOL I think that's part of being a young lady as well. Then again I still find it difficult to believe people when they give me compliments. ^_^; Just keep telling her though. It's a good thing and most likely makes her feel good even if she doesn't act like it! XD

Yep, we are so critical of everything about ourselves. And having had a mother who constantly criticized about me, I know all about the lasting negative impact. So I tell her every chance I get. ^^ Deep down, I think she's comfortable in her own skin for someone her age. :D

You and me both! My mother was very critical. Nothing was ever good enough. But it's good that you do that. And it's also good she's comfortable. Hopefully that will be the case later on in life. X)
