"Yukionna" -- line art in pen on paper, digitally colored in Corel Painter
I think I'm going to start a new series in the theme of the demon women of folklore. For now, I will stay with the Japanese folklore. She joins my 'jorougumo' ("Along Came a Spider') as the predatory female demons. Some of my dA friends already know that I have a thing for predatory women, and they show up in my drawings/paintings from time to time.
'Yukionna' is a well-known ghost story and a popular subject that gets new and different treatment in many games, manga, anime, etc. Here, I gave her my own touch, notably of camellia flower and a white kimono of silk brocade (also in camellia pattern). The reason I put camellia in the image is that it's a flowering shrub often seen blooming in the snow, providing the striking color contrast with red petals, bright yellow stamens, and glossy green foliage -- it's as if the plant defies winter/death. And yet, this is a plant that gets mentioned as a 'never to bring to a hospital' flower in Japan because the spent flowerheads just drop as if being beheaded -- reminiscent of 'sudden death'.
It was nice to make a relatively simple image for a change after a series of highly detailed paintings. This one also is in a landscape format, which is rare for me, but does bring a calm and quiet feeling to the image.
Impressive image you've put together here. I really like the insight you've given me - along with that it's very inspiring. I had a similar image in mind, and this is just what I need to make something similar. Cheers!
aww this is beautiful, love the ambience. The snow effect is perfect. And I love the detail of the rose in her hair, outstanding from the rest of the colors of the pallet
*_* I love this kind of drawing from you. She's so eye catching. Predatory is a great word for her. XD The colors and the sparkles are beautiful! But I can't get over those trees. 8D I think they're my favorite part! They look haunted... which is good since she's part of a ghost story. I sense you planned that though XD
Hey, thank you, Catssy! ^^ Yes, the trees do look gnarly. I went waaaay overboard with my snowflakes/sparklies at one point (because I felt kind of weird not to have lots and lots of details to work on this picture...) and had to erase them... Trying to achieve just the right look and contrast was tricky.
I've recently returned to DA, so i'm updating and adding things.
