YAC stands for Young Artists Contest. This is a contest project that I started back in 2009 to encourage young artists ages 13 through 17 working in traditional media to compete within three age categories. With the spending cuts at schools all across the US, most severe cuts were experienced, unfortunately, in the arts. This was meant to give a fun opportunity for the youths who would otherwise not have such opportunity to participate in an art event of this nature.
Here is the group page where the contest is held (Contest submissions are accepted there, and the important announcements are made through the blog on the page.). You can see the past entries and winners in the gallery folders. It is always an impressive event with a lot of talented young artists participating. -->
Here's what I need your help with:PRIZE DONORS/SPONSORS
-- From what I have seen in the past 4 YACs, the participating young artists prefer DIGITALLY DELIVERABLE PRIZE, namely dA subscriptions and/or dA points, or gift/request art that can be given here on dA rather than tangible goods that require mailing address. Many tangible prizes in the past contests have gone unclaimed. Please keep in mind that the participants of this contest are underage and many will not feel comfortable giving out such information as postal address or e-mail. Gift/request art also has a much higher rate of being unclaimed or declined due to differences in individual tastes & interests. What we really need are donors who can pledge dA subscriptions (or dA points equivalent) in any amount (single or multiple 1-month & 3-month subscriptions, or any number of points as they can be donated on my dA page for use in YAC). That said, if you feel inclined to give your art as a prize, I welcome all your generosity. ^^ With my ever-growing workload, I really need to streamline the operation of this event. So I would respectfully like to ask that donors not specify which winner his/her prize is awarded to (Example: A gift art to the first place winner, etc.). This contest has 3 age categories and each will have first, second, and third place winners, and honorable mentions. In addition, the grand winner, Best of Show, will be selected from the first place winners of the 3 categories.JUDGES
-- All past judges are welcome to return to serve on the jury board and new applicants interested in volunteering in this capacity are encouraged to send a note to me for consideration. The following are the requirements:
1. Must be 18 or older.
2. Appreciate & respect various styles and levels of art.
3. An ability to communicate well in written English.
4. Be able to check the dA notes at least twice a week during the judging period (August 16, 2013 onward for 3 to 4 weeks) for contest related correspondences.
5. *IMPORTANT* Must be responsible enough to contact me immediately when he/she can no longer serve as a judge in a timely manner for any reason.
Please comment here on this journal if you can help me bring this event for the 5th year. You can contact me via notes, also. The official contest announcement will be posted during the second full week of June, with the contest opening for submissions on June 15, 2013. Please let me hear from you before I make the official announcement so your dA icon/username can be included in the announcement.
I am thinking about possibly changing the age categories a little bit and expanding the contest age range.
The changes I'm thinking about are as follows.
Category 1 -- ages 13 & 14
Category 2 -- ages 15 & 16
Category 3 -- ages 17 & 18
*The Category 1 in the past has always had the smallest turnout and it seemed to be shrinking with every passing year.
And if I were to group age 13 and age 14 together, it seems logical to add the age 18 group into the Category 3 with age 17 group. This is not made official yet, but I will be simplifying the rules and implementing some changes this year in the announcement. This is one of the possible changes. Please comment what you think about this particular change. ^^
